Body Type Calculator

Work out your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), the matching health-risk category and your body shape โ€” apple or pear โ€” from your waist and hip measurements.

How to use this calculator

1. Measure your waist and hips

Measure your waist at the narrowest point (around the navel) and your hips at the widest point of your buttocks. Keep the tape level and snug, not tight.

2. Pick gender and units

Choose male or female so the right risk thresholds are applied, and set centimetres or inches โ€” the ratio is the same either way.

3. Read your ratio, risk and shape

The headline is your WHR. The cards show the matching health-risk category and whether your shape leans apple (more around the waist) or pear (more around the hips).

Use it alongside other measures

WHR captures fat distribution, which BMI ignores. Looking at both gives a fuller picture than either on its own.

About body type and WHR

What is waist-to-hip ratio?

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. It describes how fat is distributed around the body and is used as a quick indicator of health risk linked to abdominal fat.

What is the difference between an apple and a pear body shape?

An apple shape carries more weight around the middle (higher WHR), while a pear shape carries more around the hips and thighs (lower WHR). Apple-shaped fat distribution is generally linked with higher metabolic risk.

Not medical advice

This tool offers a general screening estimate, not a diagnosis. Discuss any health concerns about your weight or fat distribution with a qualified healthcare professional.
