How to use this calculator

1. Set the bill and party size

Enter the bill amount and how many people are splitting it. The split assumes everyone pays equally.

2. Pick a tip percentage

Use the preset chips for the common rates (10-25%) or type a custom value. The calculator updates instantly.

3. Round up for cash

Toggle "Round per-person up to nearest dollar" when paying in cash โ€” handy when nobody wants to carry coins or sort out small change.

Quick mental shortcut

For 20%, double the first two digits of the bill (a $42 bill: 20% โ‰ˆ $8.40). For 15%, take 10% and add half. These rules of thumb get you close enough without pulling out your phone.

About tipping

Standard tip in the US?

For sit-down restaurants, 15-20% of the pre-tax bill is customary. Buffets often get 10%, and exceptional service can warrant 25% or more.

Tip on pre-tax or post-tax?

Etiquette says pre-tax. In practice many people just tip on the total โ€” the difference is small.

Tipping abroad?

Customs vary widely. In Japan tipping is often considered rude. In much of Europe a 5-10% tip is appreciated but not expected. Always check the receipt for a built-in service charge.
