About Fraction Calculator
Adding unlike denominators
Multiply each numerator by the other denominator, then add. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. The calculator does this automatically and simplifies.
Why reduce fractions?
Reduced fractions are unique (gcd = 1). 4/8, 2/4, and 1/2 are equal, but 1/2 is the canonical form. Mathematicians and teachers usually expect reduced form.
Negative fractions
A negative sign can appear on numerator, denominator, or in front of the fraction โ they all mean the same thing. Standard convention puts the negative on the numerator.
