About CD Calculator

APR vs APY

APR is the nominal rate. APY is the effective rate including compounding. A 4.50% APR compounded monthly is 4.594% APY. Banks usually advertise APY for CDs.

Early withdrawal

Pulling money out before maturity usually triggers a penalty — often 3 months interest for short-term CDs and 6+ months for longer ones. Plan terms carefully.

Laddering

A common strategy: split your deposit across CDs of different maturities (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 years). As each matures, reinvest into a new 5-year CD. Provides liquidity plus longer-term rates.
