About Dividend Yield Calculator
What is yield on cost?
Annual dividend ÷ your original purchase price (not current price). Useful for long-term holders: a stock bought years ago at $35 paying $2/share dividends today yields 5.7% on cost, even if current yield is lower because the price has risen.
High yield, high risk?
Not always — but a sudden jump in yield often means the price fell (yield = dividend ÷ price). Verify the dividend isn’t about to be cut. Sustainability of payout matters more than current yield.
Tax treatment (US)
Qualified dividends from US corporations get long-term capital gains tax rates (0/15/20%). Non-qualified dividends and most REIT distributions are taxed as ordinary income. Hold for the required period to qualify.
