About Road Trip Fuel Cost Calculator
MPG varies
Highway speeds (55-65 mph) give optimal mileage. Above 70 mph drops MPG by 10-25%. Idle, AC use, cold starts, mountains, and headwinds all reduce real-world MPG. Use your car’s lifetime average for accuracy.
Hybrid and EV
For hybrids, use the EPA combined MPG (often 45-55). For EVs, use the kWh per 100 mile cost: 30 kWh × $0.15/kWh = $4.50 per 100 mi vs ~$13 for a 28-MPG gas car at $3.50/gal.
Beyond gas
Real trip costs include tolls, parking, food, lodging. AAA estimates total per-mile vehicle cost at ~$0.60-0.80 including depreciation, insurance, and maintenance. Fuel is roughly 25-35% of that.
