About Gift Idea Generator

How does the budget affect what I see?

Every idea sits in one of five price tiers: under $30, $30–$100, $100–$300, $300–$1,000 and $1,000+. Your budget picks the tier it lands in, and the shortlist is drawn from that tier plus the one below it, so nothing suggested is wildly over what you typed. A $150 budget gets $100–$300 and $30–$100 ideas — never a $4,000 built-in bookshelf. The tier strip under the shortlist shows every boundary and highlights the two you’re drawing from.

What does the occasion actually change?

It filters the pool, not just the wording. Wedding drops single-person wearables and coaching packages and stars pairs, sets and things for the home. Thank-you caps the search at $100 whatever your budget and drops installs, memberships and made-to-order gifts. Holiday drops anything needing measuring or an appointment and stars boxed sets. Birthday leaves the pool open and stars experiences. Switch between wedding and thank-you and the ideas really do change.

Why a shortlist of five instead of the whole list?

Thirty-odd suggestions at once is a wall of text nobody reads. The shortlist gives you five to react to, Re-roll swaps them for five more, and every roll is saved to your shuffle history in this browser. The complete matching list — sortable, with CSV export — is one tab away under “Browse everything”.

Cash vs gift

Cash is most economically efficient — recipient knows their preferences best. Gifts signal effort and thought. For weddings and graduations, cash is increasingly common.

Experiences beat things

Research (Gilovich, Cornell) shows experiences create more lasting happiness than physical gifts. A concert ticket, dinner reservation, or class is often a better choice than an object.

Returnability

For uncertain recipients, choose gifts with easy returns. Always include a gift receipt. Avoid heavily branded items unless you’re sure they like the brand.
