About US Federal Income Tax Estimator

What this excludes

State income tax is included once you pick a state above. Still excluded: local and city income tax, FICA (Social Security & Medicare ~7.65%), AMT, credits (child tax credit, EITC), pre-tax retirement contributions. Real liability often differs by 5-20%.

How is state income tax calculated?

Your state is applied to the same taxable income used for the federal calculation. California, New York and New Jersey use their full 2025 bracket tables; flat-tax states such as Colorado, Illinois and Pennsylvania use their statutory rate; the nine no-income-tax states (Texas, Florida, Washington and friends) return zero. Every other state uses a representative effective rate that is labelled approximate on screen — those states set their own deductions, exemptions and credits, so treat the figure as a ballpark.

Marginal vs effective

Marginal rate applies to your next dollar of income. Effective rate is total tax divided by total income — always lower than marginal because of the progressive brackets.

Standard vs itemized

For 2025, standard is $15,000 single / $30,000 MFJ. Itemize only if SALT + mortgage interest + charity exceed that. The 2017 TCJA made standard the right choice for most filers.
