Cost of Smoking Calculator

Put a number on the packs: what they cost per day, per year, and what the same money could have become if it had been invested instead. No lectures — just the arithmetic.

Your habit

The vaping preset treats one pod as one pack-equivalent so the money math still works — the cigarette count below will not apply.

Fractions are fine — 0.5 is half a pack. One pack = 20 cigarettes.
What you actually pay at the counter.
Rounded averages including state excise tax. Your local shelf price beats any average — type it in above.

The time horizon

Used only for the "spent so far" figure.
The window the charts and table cover.
Used for the what-if only. Set it to 0 to see the plain cash total with no growth.

How to use this calculator

1. Describe the habit honestly

Packs per day accepts fractions, so a light habit is 0.25 or 0.5 and a heavy one is 1.5 or 2. For the price, the number on your last receipt beats any average — the state list is only there when you are estimating for someone else or checking what a move would change.

2. Set the two time windows

Years smoked so far drives one figure only: what has already gone. That money is spent and nothing here can bring it back, so treat it as context rather than a scoreboard. Years ahead is the window everything else uses — the charts, the table, and the comparison.

3. Choose a return rate for the what-if

The return rate turns the spending into an opportunity cost: the same monthly amount invested each month instead. Zero shows plain cash with no growth, which is the most conservative view. Anything higher shows how much of the gap comes from compounding rather than from the packs themselves.

4. Read the gap, not the guilt

The line chart is the point of the page: two curves starting from the same place, one adding a fixed amount each year and one adding the same amount plus growth. The distance between them at the far right is the real cost. If you are working on quitting, the year-by-year table doubles as a running total of what has stayed in your pocket.

Cost of smoking FAQs

How is the yearly cost of smoking calculated?

Daily spend is packs per day multiplied by the price per pack. The calculator then scales that: weekly is daily × 7, yearly is daily × 365, and monthly is the yearly figure divided by 12 so every month is treated the same. Fractions are allowed, so half a pack a day works fine.

What does the opportunity cost number mean?

It is the future value of an annuity: the same monthly amount paid into an investment every month instead of spent, growing at the return rate you choose. The formula is FV = M × (((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i), where M is the monthly amount, i is the annual rate divided by 12, and n is the number of months. It is a what-if projection, not a promise or a recommendation.

Why does the invested line pull so far ahead of the spending line?

Because the spending line only ever adds the same amount each year, while the invested line adds that amount and also earns a return on everything already contributed. Early contributions have the longest time to compound, which is why the gap widens slowly at first and then accelerates.

Does this include costs beyond the packs themselves?

No. This tool counts only what you hand over at the counter. Real spending is usually higher once lighters, replacement items, and higher tobacco-rated health and life insurance premiums are included, so treat the result as a floor rather than a full total.

What return rate should I put in?

Whatever you want to model. A cash savings account sits at the low end, while long-run stock market averages are often quoted near 7% after inflation. This calculator does not recommend any investment; it just runs the arithmetic on the number you type.

How many cigarettes are in a pack?

A standard US pack holds 20 cigarettes, which is the figure used for the cigarettes-not-smoked count. If you use the vaping preset, treat one pod as one pack-equivalent for the money math and ignore the cigarette count.

Are the state prices exact?

They are rounded approximations of average retail prices including state excise taxes, offered only as a starting point. Prices vary by city, brand, and store, so replacing the number with what you actually paid last time gives a far better result.
