About Student Loan Calculator
Federal vs private
Federal student loans (Direct Loans) have fixed rates set annually by Congress, plus income-driven repayment options. Private loans vary widely โ rates depend on credit score and co-signer.
Repayment plans
Standard: fixed payments over 10 years (calculator default). Graduated: starts low, increases. Extended: 25 years (lower monthly, much more interest). Income-driven: payment caps at percentage of income.
Refinancing tradeoffs
Refinancing federal loans into private loans gives you the new rate but loses access to income-driven repayment, forbearance, and forgiveness programs. Worth it only if youโre confident you wonโt need those protections.
