Federal overtime rules
FLSA: 1.5× regular rate for hours over 40/week (not over 8/day). California uses 8/day. Many states have their own rules — check your state DOL.
Meal & rest breaks
In CA, unpaid meal break ≥30 min after 5 hours of work, with a second after 10 hours. In federal-only states there is no required break — depends on employer.
Rounding
Federal regs allow rounding to the nearest 6 or 15 minutes if the rounding "averages out". Always-down rounding is illegal. Most modern payroll systems use exact minutes.
