When to use which shape
Rectangle: rooms, floors, plots. Triangle: roof faces, gables, half-rectangle cuts. Circle: pools, gardens, plates. Trapezoid: lots and irregular land. Parallelogram: slanted boards. Ellipse: oval mirrors, racetracks.
Composite areas
Real shapes are usually combinations. Calculate each piece (rectangle, triangle, circle, etc.) and add them up. Subtract for cutouts (holes, alcoves).
Units consistency
All inputs must be in the same unit. If you mix feet and inches, convert everything to one unit first. The result is in square units of whatever you used.
