How to build your rota
1. List the household
One name per line, in any order you like. The order only decides who starts on which chore — after that everybody moves along the list together, so nobody is permanently at the top or the bottom.
2. List the chores
One chore per line. Be specific enough that nobody can argue: "Bathroom — sink, shower, floor" settles more disputes than "Bathroom". You do not need the same number of chores as people; the rota handles either mismatch.
3. Pick a frequency and a start date
Weekly suits kitchens and bathrooms, monthly suits jobs like defrosting the freezer or cleaning the oven. Set the start date to the first day of the current period and the grid highlights the row you are living in right now.
4. Send it round, then print it
Copy share link puts the whole rota in a URL — the household opens it and sees the same grid, no account needed. Then use Print report, or the print button in the table toolbar, for the copy that goes on the fridge door where arguments actually happen.
Chore rotation FAQs
How does the chore rotation work?
Every chore has a position in your list and every period has a number. The person who takes chore number i in period number w is the person sitting at position i + w in your list of names, wrapping back to the top when the count runs off the end. Because the whole roster shifts along by exactly one place each period, over any run of periods equal to the number of people, everybody takes every chore on the list exactly once.
What if we have more chores than people?
Nothing breaks. The wrap-around comes back to the top of the roster, so some people hold two chores in the same period. The doubling up moves along by one person every period, so nobody is stuck with the heavy week twice in a row. The workload tab counts the turns per person so you can see it is even.
What if there are more people than chores?
Then some people are off duty each period, and the rota says so instead of leaving a blank. The off-duty slot rotates with everything else, so the free period passes around the household rather than landing on the same person every time.
Can I start the rotation part-way through?
Yes, in two ways. Set the start date to the day the current period actually began so the grid highlights the right row, and use the rotation head start slider to shift who goes first. That is the fix for when someone already did the bathroom last week and should not draw it again.
Does everyone in the house see the same rota?
Your rota is saved in this browser automatically. Copy share link builds a URL that opens the identical rota — same names, chores, frequency, start date and shift — on anyone else's phone or laptop. Opening someone else's link leaves the copy saved on your own device alone until you press Save to this device.
How do I print it for the fridge?
Use Print report to print the whole page with the summary and the grid, or the print button inside the rota table toolbar to print the grid on its own. The CSV button downloads the same grid for a spreadsheet, and Copy puts it on the clipboard for a group chat.
