When margin matters
If margin of error is larger than the lead, the result is statistically inconclusive. With 100 votes, MOE is ±10% — a 51/49 split tells you nothing.
Sample size needed
For ±5% MOE at 95% confidence: 384 responses. For ±3%: 1,067. National polls typically aim for ±3% with 1,000-1,500 respondents.
Selection bias
Who you ask matters as much as how many. Twitter polls skew toward your follower demographics. For real decisions, sample randomly or stratify by relevant groups.
