How deep?
2-3 inches is standard for most beds — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture. Too thick (>4") can suffocate roots and cause "volcano mulching" damage to trees.
Bagged vs bulk
Bagged: ~$4-5 per 2 cu ft = $54-67/yd. Bulk delivered: $30-50/yd. Bulk wins for ≥3 cubic yards, especially if you have a wheelbarrow path.
Mulch types
Hardwood (cheapest, decomposes in 1-2 yr). Cedar (insect-repelling, 2-3 yr). Cypress (long-lasting but environmentally questionable). Pine bark (acid-loving plants).
