"Square" of roofing
1 square = 100 sq ft. Shingles are sold by square, typically 3 bundles per square. Most asphalt shingle warranties are 25-30 years.
Pitch multiplier
Steeper roofs have more surface area. 6/12 pitch adds ~12%. 8/12 adds 20%. 12/12 (45°) adds 41%. This calculator handles it automatically.
Labor cost
Materials are about 40% of a typical asphalt-shingle roof job. Labor + tear-off + dump fees + permit make up the rest. Budget 2-3x materials for installed total.
