About Salary Calculator
Bi-weekly vs semi-monthly
Bi-weekly: paid every 2 weeks = 26 checks/year. Semi-monthly: paid on the 1st and 15th = 24 checks/year. They look similar but the math differs — bi-weekly checks are slightly smaller.
Working hours assumption
Standard full-time: 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours/year. Common alternatives: 1,920 (4 weeks PTO unpaid), 2,000 (8-hour × 250 days), or 1,800 (heavy time-off culture). Adjust hourly conversion accordingly.
Gross vs net
The conversions at the top are gross (pre-tax). The take-home panel below estimates net pay using 2025 federal brackets, FICA, and a flat state-tax estimate you can adjust. Take-home is typically 65-80% of gross depending on filing status, state, and benefits. Use the Take-Home Pay Calculator for a payroll-level breakdown.
Why is the federal tax lower than a bracket table suggests?
Federal brackets apply to taxable income, not gross pay. This tool subtracts the 2025 standard deduction for your filing status first — $15,000 single, $30,000 married filing jointly, $22,500 head of household — so on an $80,000 single salary the brackets run on $65,000, not $80,000. That is worth roughly $3,400 in tax at the 22% marginal rate.
