How to use this calculator
1. Enter the pre-tax subtotal
Use the food/drinks total before tax — that's what the menu prices add up to. The calculator adds tax and tip from there.
2. Set tax and tip rates
Tax rate varies by jurisdiction (most US states are 5-10%). Tip rate is your choice — toggle whether the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal or on subtotal-plus-tax.
3. Choose the headcount
Use the stepper to set how many people are splitting evenly. Round per-person up to the nearest dollar if you're paying cash.
When orders are unequal
This calculator assumes equal splits. For different orders per person, use an itemized splitter app or have everyone Venmo the host with their own item totals plus a proportional share of tax and tip.
