Tip on pre-tax or total?
Etiquette experts say pre-tax is correct. Tip-on-total adds 1-3% extra at typical tax rates. Servers do not control tax, so pre-tax is more defensible.
Tipping norms
US: 18-22% for sit-down service, 15% for buffet, $1-2 for coffee/bar drinks. EU: 5-10%, often built into the bill. Always check for a "service charge" so you do not double-tip.
Group tipping etiquette
