About 50/30/20 Budget Calculator
Origin of 50/30/20
The rule comes from "All Your Worth" (2005) by Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi. It is a simple framework, not a rigid prescription โ many people adjust to 60/20/20 or 70/20/10.
What counts as a need?
Things you would have to keep paying if you lost your job: rent/mortgage, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments, groceries, transport to work. Streaming, gym, and dining out are wants.
High-cost-of-living adjustment
In expensive cities, needs often exceed 50%. Aim to keep savings at 15-20% and squeeze wants โ the savings rate is the most predictive variable for long-term wealth.
